Interactive Map: Hurricane Relief Work

Using records from the American Red Cross archival collections, this interactive map traces relief efforts organized by the Red Cross and carried out by local African American communities. It features two types of relief work, sewing circles (yellow) and labor reports (blue), and it maps the petitions (red) organized by African American residents who challenged local whites community members attempts to block aid from reaching Black survivors.

You can also visit the Survivors and Relief Workers section, which lists the name of each African American community member found in the American Red Cross documents used to create this map. Each name connects directly to its location on the map.
